Jickling Family Genealogy

By Julie Wallace on May 7, 2018August 11, 2026

The Jickling family of Sanilac County, Michigan, USA originates from the Heacham about ten miles from King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England.

This family is very well documented. Most of my information comes from the Jickling Journal and Jickling Jam that came from the long gone AngelFire website. For many years Sue Hobbs maintained the site and newsletter. We are part of the Jicklings of Heacham.

Valentine Saunders Jickling

To limit the sheer data that genealogy research collects, we’ll start with Valentine Saunders Jickling (1807-1847.) Valentine and wife Mary Seapy were given 10 pounds “landing money” as a poor family heading to the New World. They settled in Zorra East, Oxford, Ontario, Canada and had nine children.

William John Jickling

Their eldest child was William John Jickling (1829-1913.) He and wife Christina Ross (1838-1928) brought the family to Flint, Genesee, Michigan, USA.

Hugh John Jickling

The eldest son of William John Jickling and Christina Ross was Hugh John Jickling. He settled near Marlette, Sanilac, Michigan, USA and married Margaret Sartwell in 1897.

Jickling Reunion, circa 1920s

I’m estimating the date as Florence Eleanor Jickling is most likely a teenager in the photo. She’s sitting in the front row, cross-legged, one arm folded, with the other straight.

We’re not sure where this photo was taken. Beatrice Leslie Wallace remembered that, “We were always told by our parents that this was taken in our woods at Marlette where Dean lives.” This might have been at Ed and Esther’s grove just south of Decker, too.

Photo and key prepared by Dean J. Jickling and Edna L. Jickling Welch children of George & Grace Jickling.
