Nichols Family Genealogy

By Julie Wallace on May 21, 2018August 11, 2026

The Nichols family is from the small village of Lostwithiel, Cornwall, England – via any years in Canada. They are also the family I know least about. Spelling of the last name varies: Nickells, Nicholes, Nicholls. For simplicity, I’m keeping it Nichols.

Mark Nichols

Born about 1824, Mark Nichols and wife Mary Mark (1824-1864) bring the family to McGillivray Township, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada. They have six children.

Joseph Nichols

Son Joseph (1860-1937) is born in Canada and marries fellow Canadian Harriet Matilda Mumby (1860-1935.) They move to the family farm near Shabbona, Sanilac, Michigan, USA.

Joseph Nichols circa 1915 with twins Beva & Belva.
Harriet Matilda (Mumby) Nichols with Beva & Belva Nichols, circa 1915.

Rexford Nichols

Rexford Nichols (1891-1956) married Bertha Hillaker (1892-1931) in 1913 and have several children – among them Beva Nichols who marries Donald Edmon Wallace. In 1935 Rexford marries Cassie Vennevy and they have several more children.

Here is a photo from the 1934 Nichols family reunion. I forgot who gave this to me, sigh.

If you ask him: “What is silence?” he will answer, “It is the Great Mystery! The holy silence is His voice!” If you ask: “What are the fruits of silence?” he will say: “They are self-control, true courage or endurance, patience, dignity, and reverence. Silence is the cornerstone of character.”
