By Julie Wallace on December 3, 2018August 11, 2026

Hugh John Jickling is arguably the first Jickling in our family tree to come to the U.S. His father, William John Jickling (1829-1913) came with family from England to Ontario, and he eventually settled near Marlette, Sanilac, Michigan.

The Sartwell family originated from New York state and came to Michigan shortly after the Civil War.

Stories

  • A memory from Margaret Esther Jickling Coupar (Autumn 1980,) “Hugh John came from Tavistock at the age of 12 with John Smith. They stayed at Tommy Wood’s house. They lived on pea soup for three weeks.”
  • Aunt Esther also remembered, “Hugh was expected to keep his parents supplied with food from the farm because they helped him get the farm started. Also kept Dr. David in food (though the Dr. could have done that himself.) This was hard for the family to do because they didn’t have much money.”
  • Family story, “Hugh John rode a steam ferry across from Sarnia to Port Huron.”
  • Naturalization – April 29, 1892 at Sanilac Center (now Sandusky,) Sanilac, Michigan, USA.

Random Quote

Evil is the absence of love, just as darkness is the absence of light. The way to dispel darkness is to shine light into it. The way to dispel evil is to shine love into it. If we change the perception that evil is something to be struggled against to a perception that it is merely the absence of love, it becomes our goal to respond to everything with love. We can help ourselves into the mindset by saying Only Love Prevails every time we perceive evil.
