The last weekend in September, I stayed overnight at the Hampton Inn in Port Huron, Michigan. The next morning, I had breakfast at The Raven Café in Port Huron, and you should, too.

I’d heard about The Raven Café in Port Huron, but hadn’t managed to make a trip in this general direction in years. The city of Port Huron is along the USA-Canadian boarder, so this was a great way to start my day before crossing the Blue Water Bridge into Canada.
The Raven Café is a coffee shop, restaurant, community gathering place, and a whole lot more. I went because the whole place has an Edgar Allen Poe-inspired vibe, more than 5,000 books, an incredible interior and… well, let’s just go get breakfast, shall we?
Breakfast at The Raven Café
I sat at the Charles Dickens table at the top of the stairs.

There are several menus available:
- Fare for food like salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts, and more.
- Spirits for beer, wine, and cocktails
- Beverages for all drinks except alcohol – tea, coffee, smoothies, and more.
- Gluten-free including a rotating selection of gluten-free pastries and baked goods.
One page of the Fare menu has Poe’s “To Helen” poem – along with information about Helen herself.

Download all of the menus, and you’ll find plenty of other Poe-styled food and beverages:
- “El Dorado” Mesquite Chicken Salad
- “Anabel Lee’s” Gorgonzola Cherry Salad
- “House of Usher” Turkey Deluxe Sandwich
- “Tell-Tale Heart” Turkey Caesar Club Sandwich
- “Black Cat” BLT Deluxe Sandwich
- “Deadman’s Reach” coffee blend
- “Two-Hearted Ale” from Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan
- “Innocent Bystander” pink Moscato from Victoria, Australia.
I opted for the Spinach, Bacon & Cheese Quiche and one lovely, steaming hot pot of Earl Grey tea.

I really should have bought one or two or three of the mugs and other awesome things available, but brunch and tea was it for me.

The Interior of The Raven Café in Port Huron
The interior is hard to describe and get it right. It’s 100-year-old building with multiple levels. I sat right at the top of the steep stairs.

The upstairs has couches and a small outdoor balcony with seating overlooking the river.

I mostly could see a nearby table and the ceiling (which is a better view than you might thing.
I was right next to the TARDIS, too, though I dare not enter for fear of being transported somewhere through time and space. I saw some of the wait staff go through the door and not return… just sayin’.

Standing up at my table gave me a great view of the two-level interior. That’s not a real person on the right, but a mannequin dressed up for Halloween, I think.

There are books and nooks and shelves EVERWHERE.

Even the ladies bathroom had interesting art/graffiti.

And don’t forget to beware the sign at the front door.

I love, love, love places like this. If I lived in or near Port Huron, I would be here on a regular basis. Such a cool, laid back vibe, good food, great books.
