Stories
Oyster Supper, 1905
A March 17, 1905 newspaper reported, “Last Thursday evening a company of about twenty-five from town went to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wallace, northeast of here, to spend the evening. Games were played and an oyster supper served. A most enjoyable time is reported.”
Phone In The House, 1905
In August 1905 the Tri-County Chronicle reported, “The rural phone service of the local exchange of the Moore system will be extended in a short time so as to take in the territory one mile east, four miles north and one and one-half miles east of Cass City. Among the farmers who will place phones in their residences are Andrew Walmsley, Alfred Wallace, John, Solomon, and Samuel Striffler, John Spurgeon, John Wheeler, John Marshall, David Law, and Wm. Gaugherty. Others will probably be added to the list. The work of placing the poles started this week.”
Entertaining friends, 1911
The March 17, 1911 edition of the Cass City Chronicle reports that, “On Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wallace entertained the members of the Elkland Farmer’s club at their home, northeast of town. A very enjoyable time is reported.”
Benkelman Birthday Party, 1924
The Cass City Chronicle reported that the Wallace’s (and others) attended a birthday party: “To celebrate her birthday, Mrs. Joseph Benkelman entertained her neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wallace and children, Katherine, Donald and Robert, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam’l Helwig and son, Calvin, at dinner Sunday.” The birthday party was in October.
Stroke, 1930
From Catherine Elsie’s Letter, we know Francis Myrtle Tindale experienced a stroke in the autumn of 1930. This left her paralyzed on one side, but not bed bound. Nevertheless, we can surmise that she could no longer fully run the house as Catherine came home to do that.
